Other companies would ask their programmers to design their websites for them – I think this is dangerous for those companies specially if their programmers have not taken any fundamentals on graphic design. Most of them do not know the importance of a well thought, well conceptualized and, an enthusiastically executed web design job which could cause the company’s online image if not well executed.

Good post. A few additions…

You’ve gotta know web design (at least HTML and CSS.)

Take your school projects to the next level if need be. If you notice something about a project that doesn’t look good but the assignment is finished just go ahead and handle it.

I’d also recommend using unwatermarked images in your portfolio. With the advent of microsites you’ll only have to spend 5 or 10 bucks per image. It’ll give the person looking at your portfolio a better idea of what a finished piece could look like. Perhaps they might even mistake a school project for a finished piece. Bonus!
